Documentation Requirements

The claim for preferential NAFTA treatment is normally made on the customs documents used when the goods enter Canada, Mexico or the United States. Procedures will vary because the forms and practices of each country are different. If you are a U.S. importer, you should familiarize yourself with the customs Procedures in the United States. If you are an exporter, you should know what documents are needed by your Canadian or Mexican customer to receive your exports. Basic export documents are a commercial invoice, a bill of lading (or an air waybill), packing list, certificate of origin and the Shipper Export Declaration (SED). Exports of controlled items require an export license.

Each NAFTA country has different documentation requirements. Following there is an explanation of these requirements by country.
